(PART 1) - The Power of Misspellings

This article is a simple test to see if people   will actually search for and click on misspelled keywords in organic search   listings. Imagine if you had a company name, product or service that had a particularly   unique name that could be spelled a variety of ways. In this test I will   use the popular brand "Oreck". I chose this term because they advertise heavily   on radio and often do not spell the name of the Brand in the radio spots. This   could lead to thousands of people searching for the name using incorrect spelling.   Oreck makes the popular Oreck   Air Purifiers and Oreck   Vacuums.

Oreck.com - America's new favorite vacuum cleaner, the Oreck XL.

Below is a list of how many time per month these search terms get searched.

  • 13082 oreck air purifier
  • 8903 oreck vacuum

Now for the fun part of misspelling the terms.

Orick or Orech   come to mind first. Orick.com is actually forwarded to Oreck.com so I assume   this would be the most common misspelling since the company has this safeguard   in place. I will now use the terms above with the misspellings.

I will follow these terms in my log files for the next few months and report   back the findings. I assume the search engines will pick up the misspelled terms   and people will begin to come to these pages by searching for the misspelled   terms. My point in all this is to see if it would be worth it to put a page   of commonly misspelled keywords on your site just to gather the traffic from   people who may have searched for your product or service using a keyword that   is not spelled correctly or by searching for a keyword that is not listed on   your site.
