(PART 2) - The Power of Misspellings Part 2

Original Article: The Power of Misspellings

When my office phone rang today and the person on the other end was asking me pricing on a Vacuum, I politely told the customer that he had the wrong number. A few minutes later the same person called back and asked the same question. "Do you have the Oreck XL Vacuum in stock?". Then I remembered about this article I wrote 6 months ago, that I had completely forgotten about. I proceeded to tell the customer that we do not sell the Oreck Products and that we just had an article about Oreck on our website.

After this phone call, I figured it was a good time to write an update on my original article about the Power of Misspellings.

It's been about 6 months since I wrote the article.  I now have 6 Orick related Search Strings in my Top 20 in my log files. Orick Vacuum, Orick Air Purifier, Orick Air Cleaner, Orick XL and Orick Clean are scattered around in my log files from the #2 position down to the 17th most searched term in my log files.

Just as I suspected the most common misspelling was Orick, remember the company has a safeguard in place by forwarding Orick.com to the company website Oreck.com.

Now let's see where I rank on the major search engines for the terms that show up in my log files.

  • Orick Vacuum
    Google 4, MSN 3&4, Yahoo *
  • Orick Air Purifier
    Google 1&2, MSN 1&2, Yahoo *
  • Orick Air Cleaner
    Google 2&3, MSN *, Yahoo *
  • Orick XL
    Google 1&2, MSN 1&2, Yahoo 1&2
  • Orick Clean
    Google 1&2, MSN 1&2, Yahoo 1

* Not in top 25 results

I think it is clear that my test was successful, now I wonder why I got listed so well for this.

Here are my conclusions.

  • It appears that not too many merchant sites actually misspell Oreck. I only found a handful during my search engine analysis. Orick XL has 512 search results while Oreck XL has 312,000 results on Google. This means that I do not have much competition for these keywords.
  • My site has almost 100 pages already listed on the search engine and has been around for 7 years and holds a Google Page ranking of 4. This shows some credibility with the search engines.
  • I provided the words in the context of several articles and not just tossed in the middle of random pages. The words were also used as links to full pages of information about the missspelled keywords.
  • The filenames of the article pages also used the misspelled keywords. I think this was key in getting the top search results. For example: http://www.sd360.com/orick-air-purifiers.html

Now that I have some good traffic coming to my site from these misspelled keywords, I am going to write a new series of articles about how I can profit from this traffic while giving my customers what they want, which in this case would be Oreck Products. Don't worry, I will keep you informed on exactly what I do and how much money I make, if any.
